What is DHB?

Dihydroberberine (DHB) is a reduced form of berberine, a compound found in several plants. The reason people are interested in DHB is fairly specific: in a small human study, lower studied doses of DHB led to more measurable berberine in blood than a comparison dose of standard berberine. That tells us something about absorption. It does not settle what someone will feel or how a longer course will affect health.

Berberine itself has a much larger clinical literature. DHB is chemically related, but research on one should not be casually pasted onto the other. Researchers can track berberine and its metabolites in blood after DHB is taken. That measurement gives them a picture of exposure, not a complete picture of benefit.

What do human studies show?

HOW ABSORPTION IS STUDIED

Dihydroberberine is takenBerberine and metabolites are measured in blood

This describes exposure in a study, not a measured health outcome.

2022 · Five healthy menBlood exposure rose after studied DHB doses. Glucose and insulin did not differ significantly.
2024 · Nine healthy volunteersDHB and micellar berberine showed different blood metabolite patterns. Long-term outcomes were not assessed.

The 2022 crossover pilot enrolled five healthy men. It compared 100 mg and 200 mg DHB conditions with 500 mg standard berberine and placebo. Blood berberine exposure was higher in the DHB conditions over the study's measurement window. Glucose and insulin results did not differ significantly. It is useful evidence about what entered circulation, drawn from a very small, short study. Read the study.

In a separate 2024 pilot, nine healthy volunteers received DHB or a micellar berberine formulation. Researchers found different concentrations and patterns of berberine metabolites in blood. Because the comparator was a specialized formulation, that study cannot rank DHB against every berberine supplement. It did not measure long-term health outcomes. Read the study.

Why might someone consider DHB?

If you're comparing products, ask four concrete questions: Which form is in the capsule? How much is in a daily serving? What do the directions say? And is the claim you're reading about absorption or about an actual health outcome? DUNEZA's displayed daily serving is 300 mg DHB in two capsules. The human absorption study used different doses, so it is not a direct test of DUNEZA's finished product or its daily routine.

Questions people ask

Is DHB the same as berberine?

No. DHB is related to berberine, and researchers can measure berberine after DHB is taken. A difference in form and absorption does not supply a simple conversion between servings.

Does better absorption mean better results?

Not by itself. The DHB pilot found higher circulating exposure without a significant glucose or insulin difference in that short study.

Is DHB a replacement for medical care?

No. If you take medication, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or manage a medical condition, discuss supplement use with a qualified clinician.
